Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty or breast enlargement, is a surgery done to increase the size of your breasts that involves using breast implants for a fuller breast volume or in certain situations can involve fat injections using your own tissue.
Why do people choose a breast augmentation?
For some, breast augmentation, fulfills a desire to have fuller breasts. Others may choose breast augmentation to restore breast volume after reconstructive surgery following breast cancer. Pregnancy, nursing, aging or even weight loss can deflate breasts or leave breasts sagging. Whether you’re looking for larger or more symmetrical breast, breast augmentation surgery can offer you the shape and size breasts that you have been hoping for or had prior to pregnancy. Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. Breast augmentation may be performed alone or in conjunction with a breast lift, also called a mastopexy, when the augmentation alone does not lift the breast to their correct position.
How is a breast augmentation performed?
Small incisions will be made in inconspicuous places for a breast augmentation. Choices include beneath the breast, in the axilla or around the areola and Dr. Armenta will discuss the best options for your surgery. Dr. Armenta will also discuss whether silicone or saline breast implants are the better option for you. Breast augmentation is generally done as outpatient surgery with patients going home the same day and wearing a surgical bra for several weeks for support.
What increase in breast size can I expect from a breast augmentation?
This all depends on the look that you would like to achieve with your surgery in addition to other factors such as the width of your breasts, the amount of skin and breast tissue that you already have. Dr. Armenta will review all of the factors involved in your surgery and will make a range of recommendations based on those factors along with your desired outcomes.
What can you expect from a breast augmentation?
While it will take time for incisions to heal, the results of a breast augmentation are normally visible soon after surgery. Patients can return to work soon after an augmentation and will continue their recovery. Swelling will resolve in a few months and patients will enjoy improved self-image and more self-confidence once they have the size and shape breasts that they desire that look natural.
