Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin in the abdomen and tightens muscles that have been weakened or separated due to weight gain or as a result of pregnancy.

Why do people choose a tummy tuck?

Many of us desire to have a flat, well-toned and attractive abdomen. However, despite our best efforts to achieve this through diet and exercise, often these efforts alone do not help us to lose the “pooch”. Even people who enjoy an otherwise normal body weight can have an abdomen that is protruding, loose or sagging. Many factors can result in a protruding belly including prior surgery, significant changes in weight, pregnancy, heredity and even age. Many people choose a tummy tuck to enjoy a better-proportioned body that reflects their healthy lifestyle efforts.

If you experience a bulge and a little extra skin in the lower abdomen only, an even less invasive procedure known as a mini-tummy tuck may be the right option for you.

What about stretch marks?

Tummy tuck operations cannot correct stretch marks in and of themselves. However, these procedures will remove the stretch marks that are located in areas where excess skin will be removed, generally below the belly button. The stretch marks that are not removed will however look much improved as the remaining abdominal skin is stretched to its new position.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

All tummy tuck incisions are placed in hidden and inconspicuous locations. Incisions are made hidden below the bikini line and around the belly button. The length and shape of the incisions depends on the extent of the tummy tuck being done. Once the skin and fat are elevated off of the abdominal muscles, the muscles of the abdomen are tightened giving you a smaller, more defined figure and stronger abdominal wall. The excess skin and abdominal fat are then removed and the incisions are closed with multiple sutures. The belly button may be repositioned to be placed more naturally on your flatter abdomen.

What can a tummy tuck do for you?

While tummy tucks are not a replacement for weight loss or reasonable exercise, a tummy tuck can leave patients with a smoother and firmer abdominal profile that can be permanent unless diminished by significant changes in weight. Your flatter and better-toned abdomen can also improve your self-image and increase your self-esteem. Since the results can be permanent without significant weight gain, patients expecting future pregnancies should post-pone a tummy tuck until after their family is complete.
